COURSE CAR ADVENTURES ON THE 1st MULL RALLY

The 2010 Mull Rally got under way at the begining of October with 130 rally crews competing on closed public roads over 3 days and nights comprising 16 special stages and 200 competetive miles.

This year, we were asked by the organisers to drive our Minisport.Com BMW Mini Cooper 'S' as Course Car on the event (car zero). This is the first car driven at competetive speeds through the special stages prior to the competing cars.

On this years event, Martin was enthusiastically assisted by ten year old daughter Emily as co-driver. Despite being only ten, Emily has been on a number of rallies with the Mini Sport Team and usually holds the post of Head Mechanic!

For this year's Mull Rally, Emily opted for the co-drivers role and along with Martin carried out the recce of the special stages, checking and making the pace notes to be used on the rally and then guiding him through all the pre-rally noise checks and vehicle scrutineering.

For the start of the first leg of the rally, Emily navigated Martin in their 230bhp Cooper 'S' to the official start ramp in Tobermory and was waved off over the ramp and to the first Special Stage.

Due to being only' 4 foot and a bit' tall and needing a number of cushions to sit on to see out of the rally car, Emily, at this point reluctantly had to give up her co-drivers seat to Ben Anderson, Martins 'other' co-driver . Emily's Mum, while confident she would do a great job reading the pace notes, had to curb number 1 daughter's obvious enthusiasm for rattling along at 120 mph in the dark.....maybe next year.....

Emily then promptly jumped in with the rally cars management team and assumed her role as Mechanic in the Craignure Service Area to 'oversee' the servicing of all three of the Minisport.com rally cars.

When asked what she liked best about rallying, Emily replied "I like staying up late, watching the speed of the cars and I love it when they go sideways. I like co-driving but I really want to be the driver..."

Thanks also to eleven year old Cameron Stewart for all his help with the spanners and the sponge.
